Both are correct but in this particular instance we are talking about RAM. Random Access Memory. This is your computers short term memory. RAM, also known as memory offers a quick storage solution. If your computer needs information it goes to the RAM first. If the computer can't find the information at the RAM then it must journey to the hard drive to retrieve the data. This is much more time consuming and is why you feel like your computer is sluggish. You can give new life to your computer by upgrading your RAM.
There are different types of RAM that holds resale value. Current RAM is DDR2, DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5. DDR2 RAM doesn't have much value since it comes from older computers. Although, some DDR2 desktop and laptop memory still has a little value. How do you know if your RAM is scrap or has resale value? Basically, anything that is DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, DDR5 is memory that holds value. Anything older than that is Scrap. DDR RAM stands for Double Data Rate Random Access Memory. Double data rate means it can fetch data on both the up and the down cycles of the clock. The older SDRAM can only fetch data on one clock edge. SDRAM was produced for computer dating back to the early 1970's to mid - 1990's. DDR RAM was much like SDRAM except it doubled by transferring data on both clock edges. DDR2 RAM added 2X clock multiplier. DDR3 RAM added 4X clock multiplier or 4 times the memory transfer rate from the bus speed as the original DDR RAM. DDR3 RAM reduces 40% power consumption compared to DDR2 memory modules. The allows for lower operating currents and voltages. DDR3 is 1.5V compared to DDR2 1.8v or DDR's 2.5v. DDR4 has brought VDD down to 1.2V.
DDR2, DDR3, DDR4 RAM Ram is available in a variety of versions and speeds. One must understand that computers will only accept certain types of RAM. For example, a computer holding DDR2 memory cannot be upgraded with DDR3 memory. The notches on the bottom of the memory pins do not match up with the memory slots on the motherboard. Therefore, you would need a different motherboard or computer if you are looking to upgrade. Another issue is to make sure you get the right memory for the right computer.
Desktop memory will not work in a server or laptop computers and server memory will not work in a desktop or laptop's. Laptop memory is much smaller and is referred to as a SODIMM. Moving from DDR to DDR5 has come with improved performance. First, there is an increase in the clock speed which allows increased transfer rate of data. Second, there is a significant decrease in power consumption. We will have to see what the future brings with DDR6 and so on!
